MySQL is a technology with which I have dabbled for years but until now I have not had the ability to dive into it. I finally have access to an account where I can create multiple databases to learn how to utilize the database and the various technologies which can tie into it.
I’ve decided to build an address book for thebrightwells.com as my first real MySQL project. Should prove to be a great learning experience.
I’ve been using PHP for a good while now, but my learning has accelerated of late as I have been able to utilize the language in several projects. As per usual I am picking it up in bits and pieces to solve problems. One of these days I will have time to sit down and attack the language full on.

This book has proven quite handy of late. I flip through it’s pages at least once a day, and quite often more than that as I’m building my personal site as well as a couple of sites for clients. I have a pretty solid foundation in programming concepts from Perl and JavaScript as well as PHP, so I am using the book as a reference manual as opposed to a linear text-book. There are some concepts which I’ve had to look up on the Web as they were considered basic knowledge.
I recommend the book for those who are comfortable with some programming, but not those new to the language.
